Who are Braunton Refugee Sponsorship Group? Braunton Refugee Sponsorship Group is a collective of Braunton residents who are sponsoring a Syrian family to resettle in Braunton. The group initially started in South Street Church, but felt strongly that the group should be a community project. So through word of mouth and by holding an information evening, the group has since expanded to include a wide selection of people from the community, including doctors, teachers, nurses, artists and community workers, with a wide range of expertise. Because the government requires sponsorship groups to operate as a charity, the group uses the church as a guarantor for the funds, however the group is not exclusive in any way to members of the church.
The group meets roughly every three weeks and is additionally split into sub-committees, where small groups of people work on specific tasks, such as housing, translation etc. The group is open to all Braunton residents. If you think you’d like to join the group we’d love to hear from you. Please email [email protected]. |
Why are you sponsoring refugees? Our group was instigated by two of our members Seb and Mim, who had a deep connection with Syria, after having spent a summer there – here’s a little of their story.
